The National Union of Students (NUS) Scotland has today (25 September) issued a statement reiterating its position of solidarity and support for tertiary education staff taking industrial action. This comes amid ongoing and upcoming industrial disputes at several universities in Scotland over cuts and potential job losses, including at Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Edinburgh.
Commenting, NUS Scotland President Justine Pédussel said:
“The national student movement stands in solidarity with all tertiary education staff currently striking or taking industrial action across Scotland.
We acknowledge that their fight is our fight, and that their working environment is our learning environment. Students only thrive when staff have secure, well-paid positions. Any temporary disruption is a small price to pay for a more secure future for education.
Tertiary education is a public good which benefits our whole society. We call on the Scottish Government to fix the underfunding driving this crisis. Public funding must increase, and the cycle of managed decline must end."
