GRR Bill passage “historic step forward for trans liberation”

NUS Scotland has today welcomed the passage of the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill by the Scottish Parliament.

NUS Scotland has today (Thursday 22nd December) welcomed the passage of the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill by the Scottish Parliament.

Commenting, NUS Scotland President Ellie Gomersall said:

“NUS Scotland is delighted that the Scottish Parliament has passed this landmark Bill, which marks a historic step forward for trans liberation in Scotland.

“Despite all the misinformation and transphobic rhetoric thrown at it, this Bill has been passed by an overwhelming majority of the Scottish Parliament and supported by MSPs from every single party.

“The fight is not, however, over. Non-binary people in Scotland are still not recognised in law, and more needs to be done to allow trans young people who are under 16 to change their legal gender.

“We need action on woefully inadequate trans healthcare too: it is difficult to access, with long-waits and an invasive and intrusive process that relies on irrelevant gender stereotypes.”
