Fighting for Students

Our education system is broken. It’s being run like a business and leaves students and apprentices without the money they need to survive.   

Even before this cost-of-living crisis, students told NUS Scotland that they were worrying about money, using credit cards to get by and using foodbanks to get a decent meal. More than 1 in 10 said they’d been homeless.

Now the cost-of-living crisis has taken us past the tipping point. 

 

Alongside students’ associations, students, and our allies, we’re #FightingForStudents in this cost-of-living crisis.

In Scotland, we’re fighting for: 

  • an increase in grants and bursaries;  

  • a student rent freeze, then rent controls; 

  • half-price bus and train fares for students and apprentices all day

  • access to hardship funds for international students; and,

  • long-term funding for student mental health.     

We’re also supporting our colleagues in England, Wales and NI in fighting for action from the UK Government too. This includes increasing the apprentice minimum wage in line with the real Living Wage. Find out more about the UK campaign here.
